Actions of the European Research Project Partnerships for Science Education (PAFSE) with 10th-grade students at Pancyprian Lyceum of Larnaca about vaccinations
The Bubonic plague pandemic killed about 200 million people in Europe, Asia, Africa, including 50 million Europeans (40% of Europe at the time).
Since the start of the school year 2023-2024, the European Research Project Partnerships for Science Education (PAFSE), which is funded by the European Union (EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program) and whose local partner is the University of Cyprus (UCY), has been actively engaging with 10th-grade students at Pancyprian Lyceum of larnaca. The students explore the socio-scientific issue How science responds to vaccines hesitancy. On the 21st of December, the students attended an interesting seminar on vaccines and vaccinations. The learning activities were organized under the scope of the partnership between Open University of Cyprus and Pancyprian Lyceum of Larnaca for #PAFSE project. We share the school feedback.
“On the 21st of December we were honored to be visited by Dr Elpidoforos Soteriades. Dr Soteriades is an Associate Professor of public health at the Open University of Cyprus. He informed our students about the history of vaccines and vaccination as well as the different types of vaccines and their effectiveness. He also emphasized that scientific literacy is extremely important, as well as scientific inquiry and development of critical thinking according to the scientific evidence acquired. The students observed the professor carefully and clarified queries that they had with regards to vaccines and vaccinations especially those that relate to childhood diseases”.
The lead teachers for the actions related to vaccines and vaccinations are Ms. Panagiota Matsouka (MSc), assistant director and Biology teacher, and Ms. Soti Constantinou (MA), Biology teacher at the Pancyprian Lyceum of Larnaca.
