Actions of PAFSE at Paralimni Gymnasium about nutrition during childhood and teenage years
The European Research Project Partnerships for Science Education (PAFSE), which is funded by the European Union (EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program) and whose local partner is the University of Cyprus (UCY), has been actively engaging with 8th-grade students at Paralimni Gymnasium. The students explore the socio-scientific issue Childhood Obesity: Challenges and Solutions. On the 20th of February 8th-grade students participated in a seminar about nutrition during childhood and teenage years. The learning activities were organised in the framework of the collaboration between the #PAFSE programme of Paralimni Gymnasium and the clinical dietitian Mrs. Christina Menoikou, who is a member of both the Cyprus Dietetic Association and the British Dietetic Association. Mrs. Menoikou specializes in sports nutrition and nutrition for childhood and adolescence, among others. We share the school’s comments.
“On February 20, we had the honor of welcoming Mrs. Christina Menoikou, a highly experienced clinical dietitian from our community. Mrs. Menoikou comprehensively discussed the causes and strategies for addressing childhood obesity. Additionally, she highlighted the immediate and long-term risks associated with obesity. The students actively engaged by reflecting, asking insightful questions, and engaging in a constructive dialogue with the organizer of the learning activities”.
The lead teachers responsible for actions related to nutrition during childhood and teenage years, specifically focusing on childhood obesity, are Ms. Salomi Hadjiconstantinou and Ms. Marie Constanti (MSc), both Biology teachers at the Paralimni Gymnasium.
